Spotted in the misty forests of Tholppetty Wildlife Sanctuary, this Sambar deer (Rusa unicolor) is one of India’s largest and most majestic deer species. With its coarse brown coat, impressive antlers, and quiet, graceful movements, it truly embodies the wild charm of Wayanad.
Mostly active at dawn and dusk, Sambar deer roam dense forests, near waterholes, feeding on grasses, leaves, and shrubs.
