A Tender Conversation on a Branch
A close-up photograph of two Zebra Finches at Abu Dhabi Butterfly Garden, capturing a gentle moment of connection, colour, and quiet intimacy between these small social birds.

Common name: Zebra Finch
Scientific name: Taeniopygia guttata
Family: Estrildidae
Native range: Australia and parts of Indonesia/Lesser Sundas; many birds seen in gardens and aviaries outside that range are captive or introduced populations.
Behaviour: Highly social, usually seen in pairs or small groups. They are well known for pair bonding, soft contact calls, and the male’s song. Male Zebra Finches sing, while females generally do not produce the same learned song.
I photographed these Zebra Finches at the Abu Dhabi Butterfly Garden. What drew me to this frame was not only their colour, but the quiet intimacy between them; two small birds on a bare branch, touching distance away, as if the whole garden had paused to listen to their silence.
