Red-whiskered Bulbul in Action

A lively encounter with the Red-whiskered Bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus), captured while a group was busy feeding on a ripe papaya. Their quick movements, brief confrontations and hovering wings turned an ordinary feeding moment into a beautiful little drama of nature.

The Red-whiskered Bulbul belongs to the bulbul family, Pycnonotidae. It is easily identified by its prominent black crest, white cheeks, bright red patch behind the eye the characteristic “red whisker” and the splash of red beneath its tail. Native to tropical Asia, the species is commonly found across much of the Indian subcontinent and is especially comfortable around gardens, orchards, scrubland and human habitation.

What fascinated me here was not simply the bird, but the action around the fruit the raised crest, open wings and split-second movements between two bulbuls competing for their share of the papaya.
